# Google Photos is eating your storage — the free fixes — Zen Inbox Cleaner

When a personal Google account hits the storage warning, the space is often photos and videos — years of automatic backup from a phone camera that shoots ever-larger files. The fixes live inside Google Photos itself, they're free, and they're genuinely good. And to be clear about our own corner: **we make an email cleaner, and an email cleaner cannot help you here.** If https://one.google.com/storage shows Photos holding your space, this page is the fix.

## 1. Convert existing backups to Storage saver — the big one

Google Photos can compress the photos and videos you've *already* backed up: photos above 16 MP are resized to 16 MP, videos above 1080p become 1080p. For phone-camera shots viewed on screens, the difference is hard to see; the storage difference can be enormous.

- Go to **photos.google.com → Settings → Manage storage**
- Under **Recover storage**, choose **Convert existing photos & videos to Storage saver**
- Google allows this recovery once per day

Two caveats worth knowing: the conversion is **not reversible** (keep originals elsewhere if you print large or crop hard), and photos backed up in High or Express quality *before June 1, 2021* don't count against your storage at all — so on older accounts, converting those gains nothing because they were never the problem.

## 2. Review what the storage manager flags

The same **Manage storage** page reviews your library for the heavy and the disposable: large photos and videos, blurry shots, and screenshots. Sorting by size matters more than deleting by count — a few dozen videos routinely outweigh thousands of photos.

## 3. Empty the Photos Trash

Deleted backed-up photos wait in Trash for up to **60 days** before Google removes them permanently (items that were never backed up leave after 30). Until then the cleanup isn't finished — open Library → Trash and empty it. Emptying is permanent, so look through it first for anything deleted by mistake: once the Trash is cleared, there is no getting a photo back. And expect lag either way: Google says storage totals can take up to 48–72 hours to update after big deletions, so don't judge the result the same hour.

## 4. Stop it from refilling

In Google Photos' backup settings, choose **Storage saver** quality for future backups. Your camera keeps shooting the same photos; they simply cost less of your 15 GB from now on.
