# Is it your phone or your Google account that's full? — Zen Inbox Cleaner

"Storage full" can mean two completely different things: the physical space **on your phone**, or the **15 GB of cloud storage** your Google account shares across Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos. They fill up independently, their warnings look confusingly similar, and the fix for one does nothing for the other. One minute of checking saves an afternoon of deleting the wrong things.

## Check your Google account storage — one minute

Open https://one.google.com/storage while signed in to the account that got the warning. It shows one bar with the exact split: how much of your storage is Google Photos, how much is Gmail, how much is Drive. **That split is the whole diagnosis.** Whatever product holds the most space is the one to clean — deleting email cannot help an account that photos filled, and deleting photos cannot help an account that email filled.

## Check your phone storage — one minute

- **iPhone:** Settings → General → iPhone Storage. iOS shows a bar chart by category and per-app sizes.
- **Android:** Settings → Storage (wording varies slightly by manufacturer). Most Android phones break usage down by apps, images, videos, and audio.

If the phone is what's full, the space is usually in the camera roll, downloaded videos, and messaging-app media (WhatsApp keeps every photo and video from every chat unless you tell it not to). Your phone's own storage screen offers cleanup suggestions; iOS can offload unused apps, and many Android phones can auto-archive them. A cloud cleanup — email included — won't return a single byte of *device* space.

## Why this mix-up is so common

Google's storage warning arrives *in your inbox* with Gmail's name on it, so it reads like a mailbox problem — but the number it reports is the shared account quota, where Gmail is often the smallest slice. Meanwhile your phone shows its own, unrelated storage warnings on the same screen you read email on. Two systems, both shouting "storage", neither saying clearly which one they mean.
